Nearly 700 students from across Southern, Eastern KY participate in series of ‘virtual’ out-of-state summer field trips thanks to The Center for Rural Development’s CenterNET2 network

 Students from across Southern and Eastern Kentucky traveled hundreds of “virtual” miles this summer for unique one-on-one interaction with history experts and even NASA space officials—all without having to leave the area—thanks to live, interactive videoconferences provided by The Center for Rural Development’s award-winning CenterNET2 videoconferencing network.
During the last three months, nearly 700 middle and high school students have taken 10 virtual field trips to sites in Orlando, FL, Frankfort, KY, Omaha, NE., Glen Cove, NY, and Newport News, VA, where they have learned about everything from America’s space exploration program to one of the most significant events in history, the Holocaust.

Rogers Scholars Sarah Crawford and Taylor Speaks selected to represent second class of 2010 graduates as Rogers Scholar Ambassadors

 Rogers Scholar graduates Sarah Crawford and Taylor Speaks, both from Pulaski County, have been selected by their peers to represent them as Rogers Scholar Ambassadors. Crawford, a junior at Pulaski County High School, and Speaks, a junior at Somerset High School, will continue to serve The Center for Rural Development’s Rogers Scholars program as ambassadors and representatives of the second class of 2010 Rogers Scholars graduates.

Rogers Scholar Taryn Cantrell of Pike County receives prestigious Doug Reece Memorial Award from The Center for Rural Development’s flagship youth program

 Taryn Cantrell of Pike County has been recognized for having the highest-scoring application among students who participated in this summer’s second session of The Center for Rural Development’s Rogers Scholars program.
Cantrell, 16, a junior at Pikeville High School, was presented the Doug Reece Memorial Award on July 16 at an awards presentation in front of her graduating class at The Center in Somerset.
The award is presented in memory of the late Doug Reece, a prominent attorney in Southern and Eastern Kentucky and former chairman of the executive committee of The Center’s board of directors.

Second and final class of 2010 Rogers Scholars graduates from the program July 16 at The Center for Rural Development in Somerset

 Thirty-seven rising high school juniors from across Southern and Eastern Kentucky—the final class of the 2010 summer sessions of Rogers Scholars—graduated on July 16 at The Center for Rural Development in Somerset after scaling new heights, building their leadership and entrepreneurial skills, and having the time of their young lives.
At the awards and graduation program, Lonnie Lawson, president and CEO of The Center, personally congratulated Scholars on their accomplishments and presented each with a certificate signifying their completion of the program.

Business, nonprofit leaders from Southern, Eastern Kentucky named finalists for 2010 Excellence in Entrepreneurship Awards set for Sept. 13 at The Center for Rural Development

Finalists in the 2010 Excellence in Entrepreneurship Awards (EIEA) program have been announced and will be recognized at the program’s awards luncheon—featuring special guest speaker U.S. Congressman Harold “Hal” Rogers (KY-05)—on Sept. 13 at The Center for Rural Development in Somerset, Ky.
The EIEA selection committee has named three finalists in each of the four awards categories that honor businesses or not-for-profit organizations for exemplifying the spirit of entrepreneurship and playing an important role in growing the economy of Southern and Eastern Kentucky.
