Leslie students receive history lesson on Black Patch tobacco wars
|
The Center for Rural Development in Somerset partnered with Citizen’s Bank in Hyden to co-sponsor a living history drama on the Black Patch tobacco wars, a violent period of time in southwestern Kentucky in early 1900s, for approximately 100 students at Stinnett Elementary School.
The Center’s Arts Education Outreach Program collaborated with Citizen’s Bank, a local sponsor, to bring Kentucky Chautauqua performer Ethan Sullivan Smith, a 17-year-old actor from Cynthiana, Ky., to Leslie County for an arts education performance on Black Patch War hero Price Hollowell. Ethan, dressed in a white shirt and knee-length brown trousers, presented the program to a group of fourth- and fifth-grade students Tuesday, May 13, from a makeshift stage in the Richard P. Bowling Memorial Gymnasium.
The Black Patch Wars occurred during the early years of the 20th Century primarily in southwestern Kentucky and adjoining districts in Tennessee over falling market prices for dark leaf tobacco.
