The Center for Rural Development will be conducting three informational sessions on July 7 and 8 at regional sites in Somerset, Hazard, and Morehead to provide prospective grant applicants in Southern and Eastern Kentucky communities more information about Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) funding support for community strategic planning projects.
The sessions have been scheduled for Wednesday, July 7, at 10 a.m. at The Center, located at 2292 South U.S. 27 (at Traffic Light No. 15) in Somerset and later on that same day at 3 p.m. at Kentucky River Area Development District, 917 Perry Park Road, Hazard; and on Thursday, July 8, at 10 a.m. at Gateway Area Development District, Eagle Point MMRC, 110 Lake Park Drive, in Morehead.
The Center’s staff will share information about the latest ARC funding opportunities currently available through the Developing and Implementing Community Strategies Program for eligible cities and counties across Southern and Eastern Kentucky.
The application period for the second cycle of funding will be open through July 19, and grants are expected to be awarded in September.
In 2010, The Center will award $145,000 in ARC grant funding to communities to encourage and support improved community strategic planning throughout the region.
Six communities and organizations were awarded $54,800 in ARC mini-grants to advance strategic planning efforts in the region during the first cycle of federal grant funding announced earlier this year by U.S. Congressman Harold “Hal” Rogers (KY-05) and Lonnie Lawson, president and CEO of The Center.
Recipients of the latest round of ARC grant funding included Tri-Cities Heritage Development in Harlan County; Letcher County Convention and Tourism Commission; City of Prestonsburg; Wayne County Fiscal Court; City of Stanford; and Harlan County Fiscal Court.
Funds can be used for either the successful creation of a strategic plan or the implementation of priority community development projects identified in existing strategic plans.
Individual project awards will range from $5,000 up to a maximum of $10,000. All projects must be completed within a six-month period.
The Center is encouraging the use of technology solutions in the implementation and execution of these plans and projects.
