While Rogers Explorers were learning all about college life, Lindsey Wilson College student Elizabeth Goode of Somerset was getting first hand experience working with students in a learning environment to further her career goals of becoming a teacher.
Goode, a senior secondary education major, received valuable on-the-job training she can use to enhance her skills in the education profession this summer while participating in a summer internship with The Center for Rural Development and Forward in the Fifth.
During the months of June and July, she attended all three of The Center’s Rogers Explorer camps working with rising high school freshmen from across Southern and Eastern Kentucky to build their math and science skills and grow their leadership potential as the region’s next generation of leaders.
She also worked side-by-side with Forward in the Fifth staff to address the current challenges of student dropout and enrichment workshops by offering solutions to improve education across its 42-county service area.
“These experiences will serve Elizabeth well as she begins her career by providing a holistic view of education and the various groups of individuals with whom she will be working on a regular basis,” Jim Tackett, executive director of Forward in the Fifth, said. “In turn, our organizations have benefited by Elizabeth’s enthusiasm and ensuring relevance for students in an ever-changing world.”
Goode is a member of the prestigious Bonner Scholars Program.
The Center for Rural Development—the Center of Excellence for rural Kentucky and the nation—provides economic and community development programs to residents in a 42-county primary service area of Southern and Eastern Kentucky, and is home to several statewide and national technology-based programs.
