Program Overview

The Entrepreneurial Leadership Institute’s purpose is to develop future business leaders and entrepreneurs in Southern and Eastern Kentucky. High school freshmen, sophomores and juniors from throughout The Center’s 42 county service area are invited to apply. The program is an intensive, weeklong program focused on developing creativity, teamwork, business and leadership skills. The Institute is developed, coordinated and supervised by The Center for Rural Development and will be held at The Center’s facility in Somerset, Kentucky. The program will begin on Sunday, June 8, 2008 and conclude on Friday, June 13, 2008. All lodging, meals, and program expenses (with the exception of transportation to and from the program) are free to the student. Enrollment is limited to 30 students. The Entrepreneurial Leadership Institute applications are due by January 31, 2008. All applications must be postmarked by this date.

Activities during the week are both educational and fun. Participants will be divided into teams. The weeklong institute includes classroom instruction, guest speakers, competitions and tours of local businesses. The concluding event will be a team business concept competition.

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply, the student must:

  • Be a high school freshman, sophomore or junior at a high school located within the 42-county service area of The Center for Rural Development
  • Have a demonstrated interest in business, leadership and entrepreneurship
  • Have a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.5 (on a 4 point scale)

Selection Process

Interested students are required to submit the attached application which includes school transcript and school letter of recommendation. Applications are also available on The Center’s website at www.centertech.com or by contacting Jessica Melton at jmelton@centertech.com or 606-677-6000.

Up to 30 students from Southern and Eastern Kentucky will be selected to participate in The Center’s 2008 Entrepreneurial Leadership Institute. Center staff will select students based on their demonstrated interest in business, leadership and entrepreneurship. All applications will be scored and the top 30 scores will be invited to participate. The remaining applicants will be rank ordered by score and invited to participate based on availability.
